For the presumed sins of Alger Hiss
Edward Dmytryk gave the “House on Un-American Activities Committee” a laundry list
of workingman’s Hollywood: intelligencia, socialists, communists
Dmytryk had decided it wasn’t fair to watch
his film making career being ripped from him
No Gentleman Jim
His reasoning, he insists, is that by the communists
Dmytryk had been
tricked, bamboozled, hoodwinked, duped
That isn’t really how he thinks…
Though they were his friends and colleagues
perhaps some were communists,
(which is perfectly okay to be,
according to our country’s liberties)
and most definetly there were some hapless
working class consciousness Hollywood bystanders, too,
got cooked in the soup
To get his career back, he was the only one
of the Hollywood Ten to sink as miserably low
as Elia Kazan stooped
He would go on to restore
his Hollywood glories
Though it would cost many
He insisted that the case of Alger Hiss
Who was accused of being a spy for the Soviets
Was what got him to turn so many in
to the committee for Hiss’ presumed sins,
but Alger Hiss maintained his innocence until he died
an old man in his 90s
Dmytryk maintained his opulence by making The Caine Mutiny
In honor of those harmed by the vicious and unconstitutional
McCarthy witch hunt, in general
Let's unite to defend, with words and deeds,
Your right and mine to be a communist
Or any other thing to be
Except a fascist, sadist, disaster capitalist
or a friendly witness like Edward Dmytryk
